THE WORKSHOP
This four-day workshop which will take place in Cremona (March 26th-29th, 2025), invites experienced musicians, performers, improvisers, and live coders specialising in electroacoustic improvisation to explore the intersection of music, body, and technology with distinguished scholars and world-leading practitioners.
Morning sessions: Engaged in discussions led by distinguished scholars, active in the fields of electroacoustic music, contemporary composition, and sound studies, including the musicologists Joseph Auner (Tufts University, Boston), Miriam Akkermann (Freie Universität, Berlin), Pierre Couprie (Paris-Saclay University), the discussants Giacomo Albert, Simone Faraci, Leo Izzo, Giovanni Mori, Ludovico Peroni, Sandro Pizzichelli, Luisa Santacesaria, Francesca Scigliuzzo, as well as the ImproComp project members Gianmario Borio (Principal Investigator), Michela Garda, Francesco Giomi, Massimiliano Guido and Ingrid Pustijanac. Through a dynamic and dialogic methodology the discussion aims to investigate the borderscape of electroacoustic improvisation today.
Afternoon sessions: Exploring the improvisation practice with world-leading practitioners. The participants will work in a small group, to workshop quartets of improvised electronic music. Under the mentoring of Alexandra Cárdenas (https://alexandracardenas.com/), Walter Prati (https://www.walterprati.it/), or Pierre Alexandre Tremblay (https://www.pierrealexandretremblay.com/), the participants will work with their own electro-acoustic instrument and develop group improvisation skills, through rehearsals, discussions, and towards a concert on the last evening.
Aims:
– develop listening and playing strategies towards performing group electronic music improvisations;
– review and challenge instrument design decisions and practices for this musical context;
– articulate constructive critiques around improvised ensemble pieces;
There is also the possibility to attend the sessions as auditors.
Please note: each participant must fit their setup on a small table (80 cm x 40 cm) and provide a mono-compatible output. This constraint is to enable the cohabitation of the three quartets on stage.
HOW TO APPLY
Nine scholarships will be awarded to the music performers/improvisers accepted on this workshop. To be considered for selection, candidates must submit their application by January 31, 2025 via email (ingrid.pustijanac@unipv.it) or through the ImproCom website.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Applications will be reviewed by a dedicated panel, which will compile a list of successful candidates based on the following primary criteria:
- Previous Experience and Specific Training: Participation in performances, workshops, and seminars related to electroacoustic improvisation;
- Motivation: Alignment with the workshop’s training objectives as expressed in the personal statement.
Additional consideration will be given to candidates who demonstrate a willingness to participate in knowledge-sharing practices and engage in cultural exchange and dialogue. The selection committee may contact candidates directly for interviews to gain further insight into their profiles and interests.
Notification and Confirmation:
Selected candidates will be notified via email by February 15th.
Successful applicants must confirm their participation within 5 days of receiving the notification. Failure to do so will result in exclusion from the shortlist.

Lunch and Accommodation: Provided from 26th to 29th March (inclusive).
Certificate of Attendance: Granted upon 100% participation in all workshop sessions.
